"For me, it's important to give back"

In my later teenage years I had a lot of health issues, and got to see the valuable work done by the health sector first hand. In my mid twenties one of these health issues resurfaced and I experienced a pneumothorax, severely restricting my breath while at home in St Ives.

The first help to arrive was a Community First Responder, which back then was run by Magpas. The responder provided oxygen but was a great support until further help arrived and this is when Magpas first really appeared on my radar.

Fast forward to 2019 and some work I was doing brought me into contact with the team at Magpas. Having attended a volunteer event at the helicopter’s old base at RAF Wyton, I put my name down and shortly afterwards I volunteered at my first event.

It’s now surpassed five years and after many events and taking on some more responsibilities I very much still love volunteering for this amazing charity. From supporting outdoor events, bucket collections, driving Mapgas events van, indoor events, supporting challenges and anything else that pops up along the way.

Magpas is an outstanding charity with some of the most amazing people you will ever meet, across their staff, medical crews and volunteering. Everyone is incredibly supportive and truly behind the organisations mission of saving lives. Be that by supporting the teams, raising awareness or raising funds.

If you have not done volunteering before I would thoroughly recommend it. I find volunteering incredibly rewarding and enjoyable but also a great change from my normal working life and always feel better for it.
