Summary
Volunteers provide 1-1, ongoing, empathetic and non-judgmental listening support to people living with autoimmune diseases.Detailed description
Our volunteers will provide a space for those in distress with an Autoimmune Disease (wrens) to feel heard. Through listening and reflecting with our Wrens, our volunteers can help Wrens to feel supported and less isolated.
- Regular Sessions: You’ll participate in fortnightly 50-minute sessions with two separate service users via telephone or video call. A volunteer's focus is on allowing Wrens to express their feelings about their autoimmune disease without offering advice or solutions.
- Training and Assessment: After submitting an application, successful applicants undergo a remote training program focused on listening skills and supporting individuals with autoimmune diseases.
- Ongoing Support and Training: Volunteers receive ongoing support and the opportunity to continue to develop their listening skills from experienced volunteers, Operations team and clinical supervisors.
'My volunteer has gently and skilfully supported me to reflect and reframe my anxieties and facilitated me to look forwards with more positivity. It is work in progress but I am able to encounter set backs with a little less fear and a title more positivity because of my listeners support' - A Wren
About The Wren Project
The Wren Project is a registered charity which supports people diagnosed with autoimmune disease. Through ongoing 1- 1 listening support, the Wren Project helps people at a time of distress, loneliness, and uncertainty to talk about the social and emotional impact of autoimmune disease. While the NHS treats the medical - the emotional and psychosocial impact of autoimmune conditions are often overlooked and yet are life-changing as an individual is forced to come to terms with an incurable illness - 66% of people with autoimmune disease have mental health problems. The Wren Project trains volunteers in active listening and empathy and pairs each volunteer with a service user. Through one to one listening sessions, volunteers help Wrens at a time of acute distress and loneliness.
