Detailed description

Traffic Marshals at Strawberry Fair help ensure the safety of everyone on site during the build, the event itself, and the pack down afterwards.

The build and break of Strawberry Fair take place while Midsummer Common remains open to the public. This means vehicles, contractors, volunteers, and members of the public are all moving through the space at the same time.

To keep the area safe and well-managed, we’re looking to recruit a dedicated team of Traffic Marshals to support the implementation of our Traffic Management Plan, working alongside our Event Stewards.

As a Traffic Marshal, you’ll play a vital role in managing vehicle movement, protecting pedestrian routes, and helping create a calm, safe environment for everyone involved in bringing the Fair to life.

What the role involves

  • Monitoring vehicle access during build, event, and break
  • Helping guide vehicles safely around the site
  • Supporting the public, contractors, and crew at key crossing or control points
  • Maintaining safe working zones, particularly where vehicles and pedestrians interact
  • Communicating clearly with drivers, stewards, and the site management team
  • Being observant, confident, and calm under pressure

This role can be relatively static, stationed at a key traffic control point, or more mobile, walking vehicles through the site depending on your capability, preference, and comfort. Whatever your style, your support will help us deliver a safer and more coordinated Fair for everyone.

Skills or Attributes Needed

  • Confidence when directing vehicles and communicating with drivers
  • Ability to remain calm, clear, and focused in potentially busy or pressured situations
  • Good situational awareness and strong observational skills
  • Comfortable standing for periods of time or walking across the site as needed
  • Ability to follow and uphold safety procedures
  • A friendly but assertive manner when interacting with the public and event crew
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work well within a team
  • No previous traffic-management experience required - full training will be given

Benefits / Why Join Us

  • Play a direct role in keeping a major community event safe for thousands of visitors
  • Gain practical experience in event safety, traffic control, and on-site coordination
  • Build confidence in communication, teamwork, and decision-making
  • Work at the heart of the event, supporting everyone from public attendees to contractors and crew
  • Be part of a friendly, supportive team that helps the Fair run smoothly
  • Enjoy a unique behind-the-scenes experience at one of Cambridge’s largest and most iconic events
