Summary
Make a difference! Mentor a young person with IntoUniversity - share your experience, inspire ambition, and support their journey to success.
Detailed description
IntoUniversity’s University Student Mentoring programme connects university students with school-aged young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The goal is to raise aspirations, improve academic confidence, and help mentees explore future education and career pathways.
👩🎓 What Mentors Do
As a mentor, a university student meets regularly (once a week or fortnight) with a young person aged 10–17. Sessions can include:
- Academic support: helping with homework, revision, and study skills.
- Goal setting: discussing future plans, from GCSEs and A Levels to university, apprenticeships and careers.
- Confidence building: being a positive role model and encouraging self-belief.
- Personal development: offering advice on managing school life, motivation, and wellbeing.
💡 Benefits for Mentors
Volunteering as a mentor offers:
- Leadership and communication skills — valuable for future careers.
- Training and support from IntoUniversity staff.
- A sense of fulfilment from making a direct, measurable impact on a young person’s life.
- Experience in education, youth work, or community engagement, which is great for CVs and applications.
🕒 Commitment
- Meeting at least ten times, about twice a month (in person or online).
- Flexible scheduling to fit around university studies.
- All mentors receive full and ongoing training and safeguarding checks.
