Summary

Help support the running of our open access clubs providing free and fun activities for young people living in Abbey.

Detailed description

We run two weekly open access youth clubs on Thursday evenings (during term time):

Junior Youth Club for ages 8-12

Senior Youth Club for ages 13-17

We provide a range of activities including games, sports, crafts, and cooking.

The sessions are lead by our Youth Worker and supported by a team of volunteers - we are looking to grow the volunteer team. Volunteers can help with one or both groups, depending on their preference. We are flexible with how often people volunteer, but we prefer it to be regular so that you get to know the children and develop a good rapport with them.

By getting involved you can...

  • Support the next generation to build relationships and improve their wellbeing
  • Become part of a friendly team
  • Get active (if you want)
  • Get creative and try new crafts, sports and games
  • Have fun!

What will you be doing?

Every session is different, and tasks will vary depending on activities provided, but could include:

  • setting up and packing down equipment
  • signing in children and young people
  • chatting with attendees
  • facilitating games and sports
  • helping with crafts
  • supervising cooking activities

What skills and experience are needed?

  • Some experience working with children/young people is great but not essential – enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in are the main requirements.
  • You will need to be able to work in a team, and in a calm, creative manner with the children.
  • You will be able to lead by example and model positive behaviour and communication, to support the children with their development.
  • If you have any hobbies or skills that might be of interest to the children we'd love you to share them.

Is there any training required?

  • Basic safeguarding training is required and will be provided.
  • A DBS check is a requirement of this role.

About Abbey People

We are a vibrant community charity in the Abbey Ward of Cambridge, improving the lives and wellbeing of Abbey residents. We do this through targeted community projects, provision of general support such as a community Food Hub, supporting access to education and employment, projects to improve the environment, and by developing a culture of volunteering in the community.
