We are seeking one or more independent Volunteer Directors to join our small board. The role is suited to someone with a background in funding and SEND
Project Fire Engine CIC is a registered Community Interest Company delivering structured, person-centred meaningful activity for adults with assessed social care needs and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
We operate through two statutory commissioning pathways — adult social care (Personal Budgets and Direct Payments under the Care Act 2014) and SEND (Education, Health and Care Plans) — giving the organisation a sustainable income model grounded in referral rather than grant dependency.
We are looking for one or more independent Volunteer Directors to join our small board. The role is particularly suited to someone with experience in finance, law, health or social care commissioning, or charity and CIC governance — though we welcome anyone who brings genuine independence and sound judgement.
What you will do:
- Attend quarterly board meetings (with occasional email decisions between meetings)
- Provide independent scrutiny of financial and operational decisions
- Offer guidance relevant to your professional background
- Support the organisation's credibility with statutory commissioners and funders
What you will gain:
- Board-level experience with a purposeful, early-stage CIC
- Insight into statutory health, care, and SEND commissioning
- The chance to help shape a genuinely distinctive community service
Why your involvement matters: As a CIC whose two co-directors are partners, we need genuinely independent board members to meet governance standards required by funders including the National Lottery. Your involvement directly unlocks funding and commissioning opportunities that make the service viable.
Full induction provided. No prior experience of the care or SEND sector required.

About project fire engine C.I.C.
Project Fire Engine CIC is a new community-based meaningful activity service for adults with assessed social care needs and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The organisation is built around a 1954 Dennis F8 fire engine, which serves as the practical medium for structured, purposeful engagement rather than as an end in itself.
