Summary
All the benefits of sharing your home with a dog, typically for 6 to 9 months. All expenses including food, equipment and veterinary care covered.Detailed description
Do you live in England, Scotland or Wales?
You don’t need to travel anywhere to foster a dog with Freedom, as long as you can access a vet. We’ll bring the dog to you along with everything you need!
However, please be advised that we are only able to recruit volunteers who live within (or a short distance from) our service coverage areas. This means we are unable to accept applications from people who live in Dorset, Devon or Cornwall and some other areas of the South West.
Are you at home during the day?
We know life is busy, so you don't have to be in the house for the whole day, but we are looking for foster carers who can commit to not leaving the dog regularly for four hours or more. If you work from home or you’re retired, this could be ideal for you.
Do you have experience caring for dogs?
We’re looking for volunteers who already have experience looking after dogs in their own home, as prior knowledge and experience will help a foster dog settle in. We are not able to accept applications from professional dog boarders and sitters.
Can you foster a dog for up to 6 - 9 months?
The journey to freedom from domestic abuse can be complicated. Some dogs and their owners need our help for just a few months and others for 6 months or longer. If you're planning an upcoming holiday but are not able to take your foster dog, we can provide alternative care for your foster dog while you are away, so you can take a well-deserved break when you need it!
Do you have cats or small pets?
Unfortunately, we are not able to accept volunteers who have a pet cat at home, but other pets including dogs and smaller pets (such as chickens, rabbits or exotics) can be considered.
If you have another small pet, please give us a call and we can discuss how fostering a dog may be the right option for you.
Do you have children under 10 living in the home?
To make sure our foster dogs can settle comfortably into their temporary home, we ask that volunteers do not have any children under 10 living in the home. If you have children who visit you however, please do get in touch or fill in an application form and we can chat through this in more detail.
What we will provide to volunteers
💸 Reimbursement of costs🤝 Extra supportAbout Dogs Trust Freedom - East Anglia
For dog owners experiencing domestic abuse, the idea of leaving their beloved pet behind is unthinkable. But, unfortunately, most refuges are unable to accept dogs. This means that people and their dogs often remain in dangerous situations.
By fostering with Freedom, you can help remove the barriers preventing someone from accessing safe accommodation, reassured in the knowledge that their dog is being loved and cared for until they can be safely reunited. As a Freedom foster carer, you’re not only helping a dog in their time of need, you're supporting a whole family on their journey towards freedom.
