Summary

To support the wide range of learning activities that take place throughout the year at the cathedral.

Detailed description

Purpose: 


• To support learning activities throughout the year, including school visits, children and young people’s events and children and young people’s worship.

• To contribute to the development of new learning sessions.

• To support the learning team with setting up and clearing activities.

• To extend a warm welcome of young people, their teachers and families.


Duties:


• Involves supporting with the delivery of children’s activities including school visits, children and young people’s events and children and young people’s worship.

• Being willing to work flexibly and respect the needs of the department’s timetable.

• Requires professionalism and integrity, as well as a degree of physical fitness as it involves walking around the Cathedral and its grounds. 

• Being able to help prepare resources and activities for children and young people.

• Being respectful of children and young people of other faiths and no faith, and of different cultures; and working well both as individuals and as part of the wider team of volunteers and employees.

• Being willing to accompany the learning team on visits to schools in the area.

• Being willing to participate in learning team social events.

• Being willing to take part in training for new visits as well as mandatory training around safeguarding.

• Being able to assist with Brass Rubbing activities on an ad-hoc basis. 


Person Specification:


• A person fully committed to the Cathedral’s Mission Statement.

• A people person and a team player, able to enjoy working collaboratively.

• A person with patience and respect for children and young people.

• Someone with good verbal communication skills.

• Someone who remains calm and positive in pressurized circumstances.

• Someone with an interest in learning and education.

• Someone with an interest in the history and religious work of the Cathedral.

• A person who is flexible and can adapt to the different needs of the children and young people with whom they are working


Time Commitment: 


• Learning guides would be expected to be able to commit to at least 2 days per month.

• A typical day would usually start at 09.30 and end at 14.30, though there are occasions when events run longer or are run in the evening.


Training:


• Learning Guides, because of the potential for one to one interaction with children and/or vulnerable adults are required to undertake a DBS check every 3 years and complete Safeguarding Training (Basic Awareness, Foundation) every 3 years.

• Learning Guides must be aware of the advice given in the Cathedral Safeguarding Handbook.
