Summary
Prepare food for our lunch clubs, which provide company and community for vulnerable and older adults.
Detailed description
Our lunch clubs run on Thursdays and Fridays, serving a warm two-course meal on both days. Most volunteers choose to stick to one day of the week in order to get to know the particular group they are cooking for. As a Lead Cook you will typically volunteer once a month.
You will start preparing the food around 9.30am, ready for serving at 12.30pm. You will prepare a two course meal (main and dessert), including a vegetarian option if your dish contains meat. We cook relatively traditional food.
As Lead Cook, you will take responsibility for choosing the menu, ordering the ingredients in advance, and directing the cooking, supported by one Kitchen Assistant.
Cooks are welcome to stay to eat, and to socialise with those attending the meal. Our Thursday Group is made up of adults with a range of vulnerabilities including physical or learning disabilities, mental health challenges, or dementia. Our Friday Lunch Club is for older people aged 60+ and includes some who are very elderly and isolated.
For many guests, this is a core part of their weekly routine and they really value the lunch clubs as a reason to get out the house and meet people. It's about far more than the food.
