You’d also be joining Europe’s largest conservation charity and the wider National Trust team proudly looking after 780 miles of coastline, over 250,000 hectares of land, over 500 historic houses, castles, ancient monuments, gardens, parks and nature reserves (including lighthouses, villages, pubs and a gold mine!). We are a unique charity welcoming millions of people each year and with a vision to open up places for the benefit of everyone, for ever.
What’s involved?
- Assisting with daily housekeeping, including vacuuming, dusting, cobweb removal, cleaning flat surfaces, and in-depth dusting of individual objects as scheduled.
- Supporting the Collections Team with the annual clean, working through each room from top to bottom — including ceilings, windows, floors, furniture, and collection items —each object treated with individual care plans.
- Supporting the Collections Team with specific projects, which may include book cleaning, textile cleaning, inventory marking, or work relating to the Domestic Wing Project. Additional training for each specialism will be provided by the Collections Team.
- Monitoring the condition of the collection by reporting any missing, damaged, or deteriorating objects to the House Team, and updating condition and inventory records as required.
- Taking part in Conservation in Action activities, engaging with visitors to promote our conversation work and the stories behind the collection.
- Carrying out any other appropriate duties to support the Collections Team, as may be reasonably requested.
Please note: this role involves working at height using ladders, manual handling, and can be physically demanding. It is available Monday to Friday, from 9:30am to 2:00pm.

- You are happy to work in the cooler conditions often found inside historic buildings.
All National Trust volunteers will be asked to

- Complete training required of all NT volunteers and any role specific training
