Summary

Support groups are important for carers of autistic children and adults seeking advice. They provide a safe opportunity for carers to socialise.

Detailed description

What you will be doing

  • Ensure carers are informed when support group meetings are coming up (via official Branch NAS e-mail, social media or text, for example)
  • Advertising the support group (posters, leaflets, etc.)
  • Attending the monthly support group sessions.
  • Signposting to other support, professionals, organisations etc.
  • Welcoming new members.
  • Liaising with other volunteers to ensure there are two volunteers present for the duration of the meeting.

The skills you need

  • Confident communicating with group members and listening to their experiences.
  • Organised and able to plan ahead.
  • Approachable
  • Confident in taking the lead at introducing themselves and speaking to new people attending the group.
  • An ability to make new people feel welcome
  • Experience of living or working with children and/or adults diagnosed with autism (eg current volunteers are parents).

When and where

  • Time commitment: approx. 2 hours on one evening per month
  • We run the carer support group monthly (currently the first Tuesday of every month, 7.30-9pm at a venue in North Cambridge)
  • All other planning for the group to be home-based
