Summary

Become an Events Volunteer and support the Museum team in the planning, delivery and evaluation of The Farmland Museum’s regular special events days.

Detailed description

Hours:

  • By arrangement on event days, usually Bank Holiday Mondays, school holidays and some weekends.


Dress Code:

  • Practical, comfortable and warm clothing. Sturdy shoes.
  • Volunteer badge will be provided.

Duties:

  • Helping to prepare for the event – eg. preparing craft activities, information and signs, marking out spaces for exhibitors, moving tables and chairs, putting up gazebos, setting up a stall
  • Being a friendly face for all visitors attending the event, answering any questions, telling them about what’s on and where and encouraging them to get involved with activities
  • Getting visitors to provide feedback on the event by filling in comment cards or questionnaires
  • Leading a creative activity session such as family craft activity or story-telling
  • Getting into costume for Living History displays
  • Checking on exhibitors to make sure that their needs are met and clearing tables for café
  • Comply with all The Farmland Museum’s health & safety, safeguarding and other policies and reporting to the Museum Manager all issues that arise during setting up, during and after the event


Optional duties:

The museum has a small volunteer team and everyone works together to support the museum as best they can. From time to time, you may be asked if you’d like to help out with event days, children’s craft activities, providing cover in the admissions kiosk, tidying the site as necessary. If you’d like to do any of this, training for specific tasks will be given when needed.


Training:

  • Working alongside an experienced volunteer initially
  • Computer skills as required, using Word, Excel, social media
  • Event programme, site map, introductions to team and safety briefing provided in advance
  • All relevant Farmland Museum Health & Safety policies and procedures


Personal qualities required:

  • Enjoys working in a team environment
  • Happy to work independently at times, once confident in the skills needed
  • Willing to gain more experience & skills working with public and activity leaders/ craftspeople
  • Have stamina to be on your feet for most of the event or to adapt activities according to needs
  • Has or would like to develop events programming and delivery skills
  • Able to work to activity guidelines and standard events procedures
  • Security conscious and uses safe working practices at all times
  • Good communication skills, especially with families and children
  • Interest in Fenland farming history, local history, museums or archives is helpful, not essential


Notes:

  1. An Application Form must be completed, emergency contact given and any medical conditions that may affect you while at the Museum notified in confidence to Museum Manager, who is a qualified First Aider.
  2. All appointments will be at the discretion of the Museum Manager in conjunction with the Chair of Trustees and subject to a 6 weeks’ probationary period to confirm that the voluntary position is the correct choice for both parties.
  3. This role is purely voluntary and this arrangement is not meant to be a legally binding one or an employment contract.
