Help support the delivery of our free cookery workshops for men who are seeking to learn cooking skills, make friends, and improve their confidence

Do you want to help tackle food poverty through education, promote access to affordable, sustainable food through skillsharing, and help build community through shared meals?

This September we are running another course of our free cookery workshops for men in the Abbey ward of Cambridge. We are seeking volunteers who can use their skills and enthusiasm to help us build a supportive and welcoming environment for participants in this project, which is aimed at helping men gain confidence in the kitchen and connect over a communal meal.

You don't need to have any formal cooking experience, just a passion for tackling food injustice and building community through mutual aid. By volunteering you'll learn invaluable peer support skills while reaping the benefits of cooking and eating together with new friends.

As a volunteer, you'll be helping with a variety of activities including:

  • Welcoming and chatting with participants to create a warm, sociable atmosphere
  • Supervising and assisting participants with practical cookery tasks as they prepare simple, nutritious meals
  • Washing up equipment and crockery
  • Setting up and packing away equipment

Sessions are held at the Abbey Cledara Stadium, on Wednesday mornings for 8 weeks from 2nd September-21st October. We would love to find some volunteers who can join us for the whole course - it makes a big difference both for the men taking part and for you as a volunteer when you can get to know and connect with each other over the weeks.

You don't need any previous experience of helping at a cookery workshop to volunteer. Some basic cookery skills would be useful, but aren't essential - the main thing is being enthusiastic about working with people and getting stuck in!
