Join us to help with running children's activities at a food waste workshop day at Bassingbourn Primary School

We are running a food waste workshop with KS2 (age 8-11) students Bassingbourn Community Primary School on 2nd July. As a volunteer you'll be helping with running one of the two activities we have designed to engage children around the topic of food waste in a fun and engaging way.

Disco Soup: Preparing and chopping veg to disco tunes! This is an energetic session involving dancing as well as food preparation. Volunteers will:

  • Help with set up and clean up
  • Assist and supervise the children chopping the vegetables
  • Help with heating the soup to be heated up and serving samples to the children

Creative Illustrations: Children make pledges or write a food waste tip and illustrate it with vegetable stamping and/or collage using food packaging. Photographs of their artwork will be featured as illustrations in a community recipe book of seasonal climate-friendly recipes. Volunteers will:

  • Help with set up and clear up
  • Assist and supervise the children whilst they complete their activities - both discussing possible pledges/tips and in creating the artwork

Do I need any training?

  • There will be DBS-checked staff present at all times during the children’s activities so you don't need to have your own DBS check.
  • Some experience of working with children would be great but isn't essential - the main thing is being enthusiastic and willing to get stuck in!
  • We'll give you a briefing on how the activities work and exactly what your role is, and there'll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions
