Rooted in Community: Natalie's Experience as a Fusion Trustee

Why I’m Proud to Be a Volunteer for Fusion Family and Youth Projects in Huntingdon

Natalie Leigh-Brown shares her experience as a Trustee.

When I first joined Fusion Family and Youth Projects in Huntingdon, I had no idea how much this volunteering role would come to mean to me. Fusion’s mission is all about supporting young people and families—but as a trustee, I work very much behind the scenes. My focus is on steering the charity, being that critical friend and helping to support the incredible staff and volunteers who make Fusion such an asset to our community.

My employer, Urban&Civic, gives me time off as part of their volunteering policy to support local charities and organisations. Volunteering makes me feel both fulfilled and energised. It’s not just about giving my time; it’s about being part of something bigger than myself.

One of my favourite parts of volunteering with Fusion is the sense of connection. I’ve met people I might never have crossed paths with otherwise—young people, families, and fellow volunteers—each with their own story. Those connections have made me feel more rooted in my community and more aware of the challenges and triumphs happening around us.

A particular highlight for me was when our young volunteers, known as the “orange t-shirts,” spoke to local politicians about their experiences and how Fusion has helped them. Hearing their voices, confidence, and passion made me truly understand the value of giving young people a place where they feel safe, supported, and valued. It was a powerful reminder of why this work matters so much.

I’ve always felt supported and appreciated in my role. The Fusion team is welcoming, encouraging, and genuinely values what every volunteer brings—and that kind of environment makes it easy to give your best. Like any volunteer role, you can give as much or as little time as you’re able. I juggle a demanding full-time job, two children, a husband, and my responsibilities as a trustee of Huntingdonshire Volunteer Centre, but I’m always happy to share whatever skills I can. Many companies now have volunteering policies that offer a day or two each year to give back to the community—an opportunity well worth investigating.

My role with Fusion Family and Youth Projects has been deeply rewarding, and I’m proud to contribute to our community.
